About us

Founded in 1994, Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC), a nonprofit member of ECMC Group, is a national guaranty agency that insures loans under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. ECMC is committed to providing benefits, services, and products that really make a difference for our partners and the students they serve.

Additionally, ECMC services loans transferred from guarantee agencies nationwide where the borrower has filed bankruptcy.

Our Role as a Guarantor
As a guarantor, our goal is to support the health and success of the FFEL Program. A primary priority in this mission is providing our school and lender partners and the students they serve a high-quality, accessible student loan experience. In maintaining FFEL Program health, one of our fundamental roles is ensuring participating lenders are repaid in the event that a borrower does not repay the loan for reasons such as the borrower: defaults in student loan repayment, becomes permanently and totally disabled, dies, or files bankruptcy. We administer the loan programs on behalf of the U.S. Secretary of Education by overseeing lender, school, and student compliance with the regulations of the FFEL Program, as well as providing other services in support of the program.

These services include:

  • Verifying borrowers are attending a loan program-eligible school
  • Ensuring students don’t borrow beyond federal loan limits
  • Maintaining records for borrower and college inquiries
  • Avoiding defaults by counseling borrowers who are experiencing difficulties with repayment
  • Pursuing outstanding loans after a borrower defaults
  • Providing community outreach and early awareness programs to promote higher education
