Loan forgiveness and cancellation
Reduce your balance without making a payment

In specific circumstances, your loans may be forgiven or cancelled. Whether either option applies to your situation depends on factors like your chosen career, disability status, or school-related issues.

Loan forgiveness applies when your career is in a specific type of public service. Loan cancellation is reserved for school closings, false certification, death or total and permanent disability.

Public service loan forgiveness programs

Certain careers in government, the military and education will qualify you for loan forgiveness. This includes certain teaching jobs.

Loan cancellation

In certain limited situations, you can have your loans cancelled. Generally this happens if the school you attended closed while you were there, or some form of fraud occurred. Loans may also be cancelled if a borrower becomes permanently disabled, or upon the borrower’s death.
